Parging & Waterproofing

Parging & Waterproofing

Protect foundation walls from Philly's groundwater and road salt with cementitious coatings.

The combination of high water tables (especially near the Schuylkill) and winter salt runoff destroys unprotected foundation walls. Our parging process:

1. Prep surfaces by removing loose material and efflorescence
2. Apply corrosion-resistant metal lath over severely damaged areas
3. Hand-trowel cement-based parging in two coats for uniform thickness
4. Finish with elastomeric waterproofing membrane (rubberized for flexibility)

We pay special attention to the "tide line" where road salt splashes—typically the first 18" above grade. For homes near busy streets like Broad or Market, we add a sacrificial scratch coat that takes the brunt of winter abuse.

Most residential jobs take 2-4 days. We coordinate with gutter contractors if poor drainage is contributing to your moisture issues.

Our Process

  1. 01 Step 1: Pressure wash foundation to remove dirt and loose parging
  2. 02 Step 2: Patch major voids with hydraulic cement
  3. 03 Step 3: Install control joints to prevent random cracking
  4. 04 Step 4: Apply waterproofing with brush and roller for complete coverage

Benefits

  • Stops radon and moisture infiltration
  • Hides unsightly foundation cracks and repairs
  • Reduces interior humidity that fosters mold
  • Extends lifespan of basement waterproofing systems

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does parging last in Philadelphia?

Our mixes typically last 15-20 years. Homes near bus routes or with poor drainage may need touch-ups every 10 years due to salt exposure.

Will this work on fieldstone foundations?

Yes—we use a thicker mortar mix for irregular stone foundations common in Germantown's oldest homes. The key is proper prep to ensure adhesion.
